Abandon your dream job?
dream  job  abandon  study  financial  crisis - July the 30th 2011 by xiroV
A couple of days ago we were handed an article in Danish class called "Generation "No Future" 2.0", copied from the newspaper Fyens Stiftidende. The article was about the young generation of today, our relation to the financial crisis, and a comparison to the 80's punks and yuppies.
The financial crisis has not only been responsible for thousands of people being fired around the world, but it has also made it thoroughly difficult for students to find any internships. The consequence has been that many have abandoned their dream study and found another way to earn a living. The 3-page article ends, however, with the conclusion of a very, very wise dude (you have to be when teaching at the university, right?), Mr. Flemming Ibsen.
"I would advise the youth to search the labor market broadly for a job and possibly abandon your dream job. The important thing is to get a foothold in the labor market, so it doesn't matter if it's third or fourth priority".
I must admit I have a little trouble seeing his logic. Well, we could theoretically be just jump into the first job we saw, and there are probably many who do this. But my oppinion have always been that you do the best job, if you love what you do, and I would not dare to see a society where people worked on things they didn't give a shit about. I would, for an instance, be a real shit tailor. I wouldn't be able to do a decent job on sewing people's pants all day long, simply because that's not what I want to do with my life, and I'm sure many of my fellow non-tailoring buddies, feel the same way.
This may sound very black/white, but to me it really sounds like Flemming's solution is the creation of a new problem, just to cover up the first.
